Jury convicts Buffalo man of having weapon during violent 2016 assault

A jury has found a Buffalo man guilty of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a violent 2016 encounter in the city’s Kensington neighborhood, the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

Don Lewis, 45, faces up to 15 years in prison. Prosecutors said that on Nov. 24, 2016, a witness saw Lewis holding a gun and assaulting a woman at Fillmore Avenue and Van Gorder Street.

The witness called police, who later found a gun in Lewis’ car, and his DNA was on the gun, according to prosecutors.

Lewis will be sentenced by State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges on Sept. 10.
