Hamburg has a new moniker to go with "The Town that Friendship Built." The town has been declared the "home of Trilobites" by the Town Board.
The designation making the trilobite the official fossil of the town is in recognition of Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Reserve on North Street, and in gratitude to park director Phil Stokes, for his "outstanding scholarship, and his determined efforts to make the Penn Dixie Fossil Park one of the major tourist attractions of Western New York," according to the resolution unanimously adopted Monday by the Town Board.
"As a scientist and educator I could not be more excited," Stokes said. "Each year, thousands of adults and children come from around the world to collect fossils in Hamburg."
