Driver pleads guilty in Falls robbery turned fatal

Stephanie J. Raymond, the driver in a robbery at a Niagara Falls apartment that resulted in the fatal beating of a bystander, pleaded guilty Monday and agreed to cooperate against the sole remaining defendant in the case, said Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Doreen M. Hoffmann.

Raymond, 19, admitted to first-degree robbery for the holdup that led to the April 12, 2017, death of Jose Hewitt, 59. Anthony K. Mallory, 23, charged as an accomplice to murder, is scheduled for trial Aug. 6.

Shaquan O. Herbert, 24, is serving 18 years for first-degree manslaughter. Devante L. Beasley, 19, is awaiting sentencing for first-degree robbery.

Hewitt died of a heart attack. He was beaten after letting Herbert and Beasley into 617 Pine Ave., where they robbed another resident. Mallory is charged with planning the home invasion.
