The large cloud of billowing smoke early Sunday brought firefighters from the Niagara Falls Fire Department’s Engine 3 to Nor-Lock Park to determine the source. What they found as they pulled up to the scene just before 1 a.m. was a fully engulfed fire truck.
Actually, it was a fire truck replica – one of the plastic playground installations at the Lockport Street facility.
Fire crews were able to keep the blaze from spreading to adjacent parts of the playgound. Only the fire truck and a plastic barrier surrounding it succumbed to the flames, at an estimated loss of $1,200.
A witness told police of seeing two teenage boys leaving the area just before the fire was noticed. An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
