Buffalo police make two arrests in shooting involving off-duty officer

Buffalo police have made two arrests in connection with an overnight shooting that injured a pair of men, including an off-duty police officer.

The incident occurred in the 1200 block of Broadway just before 3:30 a.m., detectives said. The two victims, a Buffalo police officer who is 29 and a male companion from Buffalo who is 28, were taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where they are reported to be in good condition, police said.

Detectives said the two men were leaving the Groove Lounge on Broadway when an armed man approached their vehicle and began shooting. The off-duty male officer and a passenger were both struck.

A short time later, Ferry-Fillmore officers stopped a vehicle in the 300 block of Jefferson Avenue that matched the description of the alleged shooter. They discovered a .45 cal. pistol under the driver's seat and arrested Adrian Lias, 41, of Watson Street. He was charged with two counts of first-degree assault, criminal possession of a loaded weapon and reckless endangerment.

Detectives also charged Reginald Hokes, 40, of Charlotte, N.C., with criminal possession of a loaded weapon.

Police did not release the officer’s name or that of his companion, but they said the incident remains under investigation by the homicide and internal affairs units.
