Two Lockport officers decorated for rescuing woman from house fire

Two Lockport police officers received commendations Thursday for rescuing a woman from a burning house July 7 on Church Street.

Lt. Matthew Hurtgam and Officer Matthew Vosler received commendations from Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey and meritorious service pins from Police Chief Steven C. Preisch.

"We are fortunate to have exemplary officers who put themselves in danger to save and protect our residents in crisis situations," McCaffrey said.

The officers were the first to respond to the 1:20 a.m. fire. With heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, Vosler removed a window air conditioner. He and Hurtgam rescued a disoriented and badly burned woman from a rear bedroom.

Hurtgam is an 11-year veteran of the Lockport Police Department, and Vosler was hired three years ago.
