WNY driver of the week: Mike Swinarski

Division: Top 8/Lancaster.

Lowdown: Swinarski is a veteran drag racer who has obtained success at the local, regional and national levels of the sport. After being introduced to the sport by a friend, Dave Janowski, Swinarski began his driving career in 1981 in the former Heavy class at Lancaster. He later moved to Pro and Super Pro and in 1996 left regular weekly competition at Lancaster to race elsewhere around the country in the IHRA Top Sportsman competition and a few years later the Super Chevy Series. In 2007, he returned full time to Lancaster.

Swinarski is also a longtime area businessman, operating South Buffalo Auto Parts.

Accomplishments: Swinarski won the Super Pro championship at Lancaster in 1988 after placing second in the class by a mere half-point in 1985. He also captured the 1986 Pro class title at Lancaster and the 1990 Outlaw Pro Stock championship at Dragway Park Cayuga. Swinarski won many IHRA races and one Super Chevy event. Once last season Swinarski won both the Top 8 and Top ET eliminations at Lancaster on the same night and duplicated that same feat there a few weeks ago. He is the 2011 Lancaster Sportsman of the Year.
