Once eyed for houses, Clarence blueberry farm opens for picking

The Clarence blueberry farm once threatened by development has opened for the season.

The U-pick farm — now known as Shimerville Blueberries — opened Thursday at 5685 Shimerville Road, north of Roll Road, said new owner Damian Baird.

There are six blueberry varieties among its 18,000 bushes, with the first two available now, Baird said. Customers can pick their own or buy them pre-picked, and honey is sold too. Baird said he also may sell berries at farmers' markets or wholesale.

Clarence U-pick blueberry farm saved from development to open soon

Baird in January bought two properties, totaling 34 acres, from the owners who opened the 10-acre blueberry farm in 2015. Baird's plans initially called for development on the farm itself. But town officials approved the construction of four homes, and the renovation of two existing homes, leaving the farm intact.
