A religious group led by immigrants from Congo and other African countries wants to turn a former motorcycle club building in Black Rock into a church.
The Christ for Nations, Nations for Christ Church wants to convert the building at 66 Peoria St., into a home for its congregation, which includes members from African countries and Haiti, as well as local residents.
Plans by architect Anthony James call for renovating the dilapidated 3,060-square-foot building – which was built in 1955 and previously was a restaurant – and making it handicapped-accessible for members, while unblocking window openings facing Arthur Street and installing glass block. The sanctuary will be able to seat 120. Parking will be available through the Buffalo Maritime Center across the street.
The church plans to conduct services on Sunday mornings, plus Bible study and other smaller meetings during the week. The congregation is seeking a special-use permit from the Buffalo Common Council because the building is located in a residential zone.
