East Side church wins Planning Board approval for expansion

An East Side Baptist church is going to double the size of its William Street facility, transforming its existing space into a multipurpose area while adding a new sanctuary for growing attendance.

First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church received approval Monday from the Buffalo Planning Board to construct a two-story, 16,658-square-foot sanctuary in back of the existing church at 467 William St.

It will seat 762 people, with dressing rooms, bathrooms and a conference area and will be connected to the old church to the north through an atrium.

As part of the $2.8 million project, officials will convert the existing church into a Family Life Center to be used for events, youth church services and recreational sports. It will include a commercial kitchen, classrooms and computer labs and a nonprofit educational space.
