Injured hiker rescued on Falls gorge trail after 50-foot fall

A 24-year-old hiker who "lost his bearings" during a hike on the Niagara Falls gorge trail and fell 50 feet was rescued early Sunday, reported Niagara Falls State Park Police.

The unidentified hiker, who suffered several bone fractures, was spotted around 5 a.m. by a fisherman on the lower gorge trail, police said.

The man fell approximately 50 feet onto the lower gorge trail, police said. Police on the scene described the victim as alert but unable to move his body due to multiple fractures. He told police he was on the upper gorge rim trail and lost his bearings in the dark, police reported.

He was taken by MercyFlight to Erie County Medical Center. The Niagara Falls Fire Department also aided in the rescue, police said.
