As miles of new bike lanes appear throughout the city, it's tempting to think that Buffalo's embrace of bike culture is a recent development. But the city's love of the bicycle – from 18th century penny farthings or high-wheelers to more advanced road bikes of the late 20th century – extends back almost to its founding. This gallery takes a look at the early days of Buffalo's bike culture, with its racing clubs and conventions, through the bike boom of the late-1970s and up to the early '90s.
