Damage to Acacia Park Cemetery is estimated at $11,000

Someone caused $11,000 damage last week in the Acacia Park Cemetery in the Town of Pendleton, North Tonawanda Police said, and investigators are trying to determine whether it was accidental or intentional.

A granite bench located in a traffic circle near the main entrance to the Tonawanda Creek Road cemetery was pushed over and destroyed sometime within the past week, sheriff's deputies said. The bench was valued at $10,000. An ornamental stone also was damaged to the tune of $1,000.

Cemetery officials said that another bench had been damaged previously by an elderly driver accidentally backing into it, but the nature of the most recent damage was unknown.
