Wheatfield man charged with trying to kidnap 6-year-old neighbor

Update: Niagara County Sheriff's Office July 10 exonerated Salvatore Prezioso and announced that a convicted sex offender Larry Keiper was the suspect in the Wheatfield abduction.

A Wheatfield man was charged early Thursday with attempting to kidnap a 6-year-old girl from her Ward Road home just after 3 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office reported.

Salvatore Prezioso, 49, is charged with kidnapping. Other charges are pending, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies said that they received a call from the mother of the girl who said she woke up to a male carrying her 6-year-old daughter out of her home. She chased after him and the male suspect left the girl on the outside steps and fled.

The mother identified the suspect as her neighbor, Prezioso.

Prezioso was arraigned in Wheatfield Town Court and taken to the Niagara County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail pending a court date next Tuesday.

The girl was evaluated at the scene by medical technicians and released to her mother.

Authorities didn't reveal any motive for the alleged kidnapping.
