Driver strikes bear on I-990 in Amherst

A driver reported that he hit a bear with his vehicle on the I-990 Thursday morning but that the bear didn't appear to be seriously injured, according to Amherst police.

The call was made at about 8:40 a.m. The driver told police he hit the bear but the animal "took off" and was "moving pretty good," heading north near North French Road, police said.

A bear was seen in the area of Lockport Road near the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station on Wednesday night.

Bear sightings over the past week have happened in Clarence, Amherst, North Tonawanda, Wheatfield and Youngstown.
