Amherst's Heathwood Assisted Living starts expansion

Heathwood Assisted Living has begun construction on a 30,000-square-foot addition to its assisted-living facility in Amherst, creating 42 more assisted-living apartments.

The three-story addition, which will be attached to the current building at 815 Hopkins Road, will include three two-bedroom apartments, 27 one-bedroom units and 12 studio apartments. Each will be equipped with a kitchenette and a private bathroom.

The project, which will give Heathwood 122 units in all, is expected to be completed in spring 2019.

Originally constructed as a nursing home in 1978 by local businessman Robert M. Chur, Heathwood was converted into assisted living in 2011, and is now owned by Carla Chur Suero. It's located across from the Clearfield Recreation Center and Clearfield Library complex.

"It is time to upgrade our (Heathwood) location to meet the needs of seniors in the 21st century in terms of amenities and space," Suero said in a press release.
