A man robbed a Northwest Savings Bank on Grand Island, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the robbery occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Grand Island Boulevard and Baseline Road.
The suspect approached a bank teller, displayed a handgun and then made off with an undetermined amount of cash, police said.
Police with long guns and a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter were seen in the area searching for the suspect. State Police were also assisting the Sheriff’s Office. A Niagara County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher said one of the department’s K-9 units had been sent to Grand Island and arrived there at about 2 p.m. to assist with any tracking.
The man was described as wearing jeans, a camouflage baseball cap, glasses, gloves, a black wig and brown mustache wig.
Police urged residents to avoid the area.
