A mixed-breed pitbull mastiff dog was shot and killed Wednesday after it charged a Jamestown Police officer, the Jamestown Police Department said.
Shortly before 2 p.m., police were approaching a house on Winsor Street in an attempt to locate an individual with an outstanding warrant.
As officers approached the house, while on the sidewalk, the dog charged one of the officers, who discharged his service weapon to stop what he perceived to be an imminent attack by the dog.
The dog was struck, but there were no other injuries reported as a result, according to police. The dog was taken to a veterinarian but died.
Police are continuing an investigation, and have issued the dog's owner a $50 summons for having a dog at large that attacks.
