Outdoor skating in Niagara Falls is funded for next winter

Niagara River Greenway money will pay for public outdoor ice skating in downtown Niagara Falls next winter.

The Host Communities Standing Committee, which controls Greenway funding in Niagara County, approved $200,000 to install a temporary 120-by-60-foot rink in a city parking lot next to the Holiday Inn at 114 Buffalo Ave., near the bridge to Goat Island. The city is contributing $50,000 toward buying the rink and hiring a company to operate it, Community Development Director Seth Piccirillo said.

The committee also funded two other Niagara Falls projects: $100,000 to plant 500 new trees along Gill Creek from Hyde Park Lake to the site of the Old Stone Chimney on the upper Niagara River, and $25,000 to complete a $239,000 makeover of the D'Amelio Park playground at Center Avenue and 15th Street.
