Buffalo man charged with pointing shotgun at police officer

A 41-year-old Buffalo man has been charged with pointing a shotgun at a police officer.

Vernon Barnes Jr., of Weber Avenue, was being held at the Erie County Holding Center on Monday morning following his June 17 arrest at East Delavan and Courtland avenues, according to a Buffalo police report.

Police were called to the scene just before midnight on the evening of June 16 for the report of a man with a gun inside an SUV. The officer pulled the vehicle over and disarmed the man inside who had his hand on the shotgun's pistol grip, according to the report.

Barnes, who was convicted of attempted third-degree assault in 2008, according to the police report, is due in City Court on July 20 to face charges of menacing a police office, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of marijuana and drinking alcohol in a motor vehicle.
