Computer box for sale filled with paper, not MacBook, police say

A man was spotted Friday evening in the parking lot of the North Buffalo Home Depot  offering to sell patrons of the Elmwood Avenue store an Apple computer for $70, store security told Buffalo police.

The man claimed the computer in the box he was carrying was an Apple MacBook Pro worth $2,800, police said.

It turned out the label on the box was for a computer, but there was nothing inside the box but newspapers, police said. There was no laptop.

Police identified the man attempting to sell the bogus merchandise as Clifford Brown of Wyoming Street, who was charged with fraudulent accosting.
