Sabres pick Matej Pekar put up big numbers in the USHL

The Buffalo Sabres used the first of their two fourth-round picks on center Matej Pekar, a top point-producer while with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League.

Here are five things to know about Pekar, who The Hockey News said possesses the "best motor in the USHL."

1. He was the USHL Rookie of the Year this season

Pekar was nearly a point-per-game player while with the Lumberjacks this season, totaling 14 goals and 40 assists in 56 USHL games. That was good for second on the team in scoring and put him in a tie for the league lead among first-year players. He was rewarded by the USHL's general managers when they selected him as the Rookie of the Year in late April.

2. He filled in big shoes in Muskegon

Pekar was the second straight Lumberjack to earn USHL Rookie of the Year honors. Who preceded him? Andrei Svechnikov, who was selected second overall in this year's NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes.

3. He has represented his home country of the Czech Republic

Pekar has suited up for the Czechs in a handful of tournaments, including the Under-18 world championship and Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He scored a goal and four assists in six games at the U18s.

4. He's committed to playing college hockey at Miami Ohio

The European center will continue his seasoning in North America, as he'll play for a RedHawks team looking to improve on a 12-20-5 record last year.

5. He was used in all sorts of situations in the USHL

Pekar was on the Lumberjacks' top line, as well as the power play and penalty kill units.
