Letter: Some lessons learned at Naval and Military Park

We four surviving World War II Navy destroyer escort sailors who were refused participation in the December christening of the LCS Little Rock at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park feel justified.

When word got out that Gunner’s Mate Stan Marek, Bosun’s Mate Dan Koslicki, Machinist’s Mate Don McHenry and me, Radioman Fran Lucca, were told there was no room on the boat deck, and were advised to watch the ceremony on television, things got out of control.

The executive director and six board members are no longer with us.

We were privileged to have been part of the original 180 members of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Buffalo Chapter at the Naval Park for the past 40 years. We hope the new skipper of the park is informed that the month of December along Buffalo’s waterfront is no time for any ceremony.

After leaving Buffalo, the Little Rock was ice-logged in Quebec for four months, and has finally arrived in Florida for assignment.

Since there is no Morse Code in today’s modern Navy, this old Sparky leaves you with a nostalgic message: Dit-dah-dit-dah-dit.

Fran Lucca

Buffalo,

Captain, DESA #4
