Argument over smoking leads to fractured kneecap

A 50-year-old man suffered a fractured kneecap Monday afternoon during an altercation with a co-worker at the Waste Management company security booth on Balmer Road, Niagara County sheriff's deputies said.

The two combatants were employed by Sentrex Security Systems Inc. at the site, deputies said, when an argument occurred over the victim's smoking while on the job. When the argument turned physical, the victim was shoved to the ground and apparently suffered the injury. He was transported to Erie County Medical Center and admitted for treatment.

The two accused each other of starting the fight, but a review of security footage revealed that the victim initiated the contact, and that the other man acted in self-defense, deputies said. Neither man sought to have charges filed.
