Lockport man who turned self in gets seven years in child porn case

A Lockport man who reported himself to police for downloading child pornography was sentenced Thursday to seven years in state prison.

"I needed help and that's why I went to the Police Department, to ask for help," said Gerald L. Perkins Jr., 31, of South Street.

Assistant Public Defender David E. Blackley said Perkins "was battling demons." First Assistant District Attorney Holly E. Sloma said Perkins has a documented learning disability but also was "manipulative."

Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III said he thought Perkins lied about the length of time he had been downloading the material – it was four years starting in 2013, not six months as Perkins said – and suspected Perkins of seeking to groom children he had been babysitting for future relationships.
