Five-time felon gets five years in cocaine-and-gun case

Five years in prison and five years of post-release supervision was the sentence Wednesday for a Niagara Falls man whose apartment contained nearly 1.5 ounces of cocaine and an illegal gun when police searched it last fall.

Juan M. Cox, 40, of Walnut Avenue, Niagara Falls, who had four previous felony convictions, pleaded guilty before State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He also forfeited $899 in cash found by police in the Sept. 13 raid.

Cox served five years in prison for beating a woman in her North Tonawanda apartment in 2006, a sentence served simultaneously with one for crack cocaine possession. He also served two years for a robbery and a cocaine sale in 1994.
