A Sportsman's Tale: Getting the bear of a lifetime

The first week of June was a little cold in Northern Saskatchewan. But there was a strong Western New York connection made with Bear Paw Outfitters, where Jim and Monty Monteleone of Williamsville made the trek to a wilderness adventure.

Bear Paw is owned and operated by two Western New Yorkers and has seen some really nice trophy bears tagged.

Although there are color phase bears in this part of Canada, the odds of seeing one are somewhat limited. But Jim’s brother Monty was lucky enough to tag a mature chocolate color phase male with his bow at less than 20 yards.

There are blond, cinnamon and chocolate colored bears that all fall into the category of black bears. That variety of other than black color is probably in the area of 25 percent of the population. But finding a mature male color phase bear is truly the bear of a lifetime.

Jim saw bears as did each of the hunters in camp and passed on a younger male on the last day of his hunt. Good food, comfortable lodging, world-class fishing and active baits made the trip a success, which by the way, is nearly 100 percent shot opportunity and is open to archery (all bows) crossbow and firearms.

Bear Paw Outfitters has a website and includes Deep in the Bush Outfitters for deer hunts in Montana as well as this Canadian bear hunt.
