Jet skiers found a decomposing body floating in Lake Erie about 1.5 miles off of Woodlawn Beach Wednesday evening, Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard announced Thursday.
The body was discovered at about 6:40 p.m., Howard said in a statement. The body was recovered and placed in a sheriff's vessel. It was then transported to the Coast Guard's Buffalo station.
Investigators said the body appeared to belong to a white male who had some facial hair but because of decomposition, other features could not be discerned. The man was wearing a black jacket that may have been leather, jeans and socks. The clothing was also badly deteriorated.
The sheriff's detectives bureau is handling the investigation.
The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the manner of death and to try to identify the person. Howard said the process may take several days.
