Dahlin making the rounds at the Cup final

WASHINGTON – Rasmus Dahlin is in the midst of a whirlwind day in the nation's capital and will get to watch his first live NHL game Monday night. Pretty good first match: Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final between the Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights.

"I don't know what to expect actually," the Sabres' presumptive No. 1 overall pick said following Monday's morning skate. "I'm just so excited."

Dahlin joined six other top prospects on a busy tour of both teams' morning skates and several media interviews. At the Capitals' skate in Arlington, Va., he got to meet Swedish star Nicklas Backstrom.

"It was awesome. First time," Dahlin said. "I was pretty starstruck."

At Capital One Arena, Dahlin and the prospects taped the annual "Coach's Corner" intermission segment with Ron MacLean and Don Cherry and it was Dahlin who asked Cherry for a photo.

"He had a sick suit. My dad watched his shows when I was growing up so I knew," Dahlin said. "Don Cherry always has nice suits. ... I didn't say so much on the show. I just wanted to take a picture. He said to me, 'Thumbs up' so I did the thumbs up."

The prospects met several Vegas players in the hallway outside the Knights' cramped dressing room, and General Manager George McPhee made sure to greet Dahlin in the stands.

Dahlin and the prospects arrived here Sunday night hours late from the Scouting Combine in Buffalo due to weather delays in the Baltimore-DC area. Dahlin spoke with the media covering the series and then had a group session with reporters from his native Sweden.

The prospects are scheduled to do more interviews later today, with group appearances on TSN and the NHL Network.

Dahlin was joined by wingers Andrei Svechnikov of Barrie, Filip Zadina of Halifax and Brady Tkachuk of Boston University, the players most expected to go 2-3-4 in the draft June 22 in Dallas. Also on the trip were defenseman Evan Bouchard, Noah Dobson and Quintin Hughes. All are expected to be top-10 picks.
