Charlotte's big inning leads to Herd's doom

A six-run fifth by Charlotte led to the undoing of the Buffalo Bisons as the Knights rallied from an early deficit to claim a 10-4 win at Coca-Cola Field on Friday night.

A leadoff walk to Michael Saunders helped open the door for the big inning by Charlotte. Alex Presley delivered the big hit, a two-out three-run homer to pace the Knights’ 13-hit attack.

Noteworthy: The Herd came close to escaping a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the fifth with minimum damage and a one-run lead. However, a two-out wild pitch allowed the tying run to trot home from third. A walk by Jacob May then ended starter Deck McGuire’s day on the mound. The Knights pounced on reliever Murphy Smith with Mason Robbins’ RBI single breaking a 2-2 tie. Presley followed with his three-run blast.

Points of interest: Danny Jansen’s two-run single in the seventh gave the Bisons a glimmer of hope, trimming their deficit to 6-4. But the Knights scored twice in the eighth and added two more in the ninth to squash a potential comeback. Roemon Fields went 3 for 4 for the Bisons, while Anthony Alford had two hits.

Next: May the Force be with you, as it is “Star Wars Night” at Coca-Cola Field for tonight’s matchup between these teams. First pitch is at 6 p.m. but the gates open at 4 p.m.
