The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team will play in the second annual Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic in Northern Ireland, organizers made official Tuesday.
UB’s participation had been previously reported by The News and other media outlets.
The field has expanded to eight schools, arranged in two four-team brackets. Games will be played in the United States in the university campus round and then in two tournament brackets for two games in Ireland. Games in Ireland are Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.
Brackets and campus dates will be released later, but here are the eight teams: University at Albany (America East Conference), Buffalo (Mid-American Conference), Dartmouth (Ivy League), LIU Brooklyn (Northeast Conference), Marist (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Horizon League), San Francisco (West Coast Conference) and Stephen F. Austin State (Southland Conference).
"We're thrilled and excited to participate in this event," UB coach Nate Oats said in a statement. "This is an incredible opportunity for our players and coaches to experience something they'll remember for the rest of their lives by embracing new cultures, while playing top-notch Division I basketball. We are also proud to represent our university and its excellent reputation in academics and athletics on an international stage."
The event is intended to raise awareness of the Sport Changes Life Foundation, which is dedicated to raising the aspirations of young people using sporting excellence, academic achievement and personal development, according to a news release.
