It just wouldn’t be the New York State Men’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship if the trophy didn’t make its way back to Crag Burn Golf Club.
This time it was the brothers pairing of David and Billy Hanes that did the trick, extending the East Aurora club’s winning streak in the event to four. The Elma natives combined to shoot a final-round 66 to at Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown and score a two-shot victory over nine teams that tied for second – one of them also from Crag Burn.
It’s the second title in this event for Billy Hanes, who teamed with Jamie Miller to capture the crown in 2015.
“It’s definitely special to win an event with my brother because we’ve never won anything together,” Billy said via a news release. The two brothers teamed up for the first time last year, finishing tied for second.
The final-round 6-under 66 gave the Hanes brothers a 36-hole scored of 11-under 133. Among those tying for second at 135 were defending champions and Crag Burn twosome Jeff Wolniewicz and Jonathan Clark. They shot 68-67.
The victory gives the Hanes brothers exemptions into the 2018 New York State Men’s Amateur Championship at Irondequoit Country Club, and Billy becomes exempt from qualifying for the 2018 New York State Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Wanakah Country Club.
David plays on the golf team at Canisius College.
