St. Bonaventure has outdueled the likes of Syracuse and Georgetown to land Osun Osunniyi, a 6-foot-10 center from Putnam (Conn.) Science Academy.
He’s the second Putnam Science player to commit to Bona, with 6-foot-4 guard Kyle Lofton having done so back in March.
Osunniyi made his intent known Monday at a dinner to celebrate Putnam’s national prep school championship. He had trimmed his list beforehand to three schools, with Georgetown and Syracuse being the other finalists.
The Bonnies may have sold Osunniyi on two factors – the chance to get playing time as a freshman and coach Mark Schmidt’s reputation for developing big men.
Osunniyi scored 27 points and was named MVP as Putnam Science defeated Northfield Mount Hermon in overtime to win the national prep school championship in March.
