Coming attractions

The postseason has commenced for the spring with championship games on the docket this week.

In boys golf, Section VI will crown its individual champion during its 27-hole tournament/state qualifier today at River Oaks on Grand Island. The tournament starts at 9 a.m. In addition to determining the nine golfers that will represent the section at the state tournament, this will be the first year the tournament also serves as a competition to determine the overall team champion for Section VI.

In girls golf, the Section VI championships/state qualifier is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Gowanda Country Club. Medina’s Melanie Green, a sophomore, is the defending champion.

In boys tennis, the Section VI tournament/state qualifier takes place at Lancaster. It begins Tuesday with semifinals and finals Wednesday. Rain dates are Thursday and Friday.

In lacrosse, the boys and girls champion for the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association will be crowned during a doubleheader Wednesday at Canisius College’s Demske Sports Complex. The girls final begins at 4, followed by the boys at 7. The Section VI quarterfinals for boys and girls are Tuesday with semifinal games slated for Thursday.

In softball, the Section VI tournament resumes today with quarterfinals in Classes AA, C and D and semifinals in A-1, A-2, B-1 and B-2. Split classification championship games are Thursday at Williamsville North. Overall championship games in all classes are Tuesday, May 29.

In baseball, Section VI will crown split class champions Thursday and overall champs Saturday at various sites in Western New York. The Class AA and overall A finals Saturday take place at Niagara Falls High School. Also Saturday, Class B is at Orchard Park, while Class C and D, as usual, take place at Jamestown’s Diethrick Park.

In track and field, it’s league championship meet week, the final tuneup/qualifier for the Section VI championship meet June 2-3 at Niagara Falls High School. The All-High Championship meet will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at All High Stadium, the Niagara Frontier League meet is at Sparky Adams Field on Parker Boulevard on Wednesday and Thursday. The two-day CCAA Championships at Southwestern and the ECIC Championships at Williamsville South are Friday and Saturday.

On Memorial Day, it’s the annual All High Regatta at West Side Rowing Club. The event begins at 7 a.m. and runs until about 4 or 5 p.m. The event usually features the area’s top rowing programs.

Signings

Kenmore West held a signing/college commitment ceremony recently. Those who took part in it were Abby Borkowski (St. Bonaventure, softball), Andrew Fron (Canisius, baseball), Frankie Mercado (Mercyhurst, cross country/track), Christina Wende (University at Buffalo, track and field), Alex Fusani (Brockport, soccer), Jenna House (Southern Maine, hockey), Keenan Kasparek (Alfred, soccer) and Josie Michaels (Ithaca, swimming).

The following Kenmore East athletes committed to the following colleges during its ceremony: Serena Sordetto (Cortland, basketball), Jordan McKenna (Cortland, volleyball), Alexis Deluca (Alfred University, swimming and diving), Mario Ruggiero (Erie CC, baseball), Brook O’Connor (Niagara County Community College, softball), Olivia Colby (Buffalo State, soccer), Gabriella Gray (Erie CC, soccer).
