College student wises up to email scam offering job opportunity

A 19-year-old University at Buffalo student from Lewiston may have narrowly missed being bilked out of more than $1,500 in an email scam that offered her an attractive job opportunity.

The Upper Mountain Road resident told police that she received an email recently from a woman who claimed to have gotten her email address from the UB website. The woman claimed to be looking for a new "personal administrative assistant," and the two later spoke on the telephone. Within days, the victim received a package in the mail instructing her to deposit an enclosed $1,519 check into her bank account.

She was to keep $400 for herself as payment, and then forward the remainder to a man in Austin, Texas. Afterward, the woman was again contacted by the scammer, who claimed to need additional money and asked the woman for a $500 loan. Becoming suspicious, the victim ceased contact with the scammer and contacted police, who said that the would-be victim had yet to lose any actual money.

An investigation into the incident is continuing.
