Lourdes Gurriel Jr. belted a grand slam to right center field, his first homer of the sesaon with the Buffalo Bisons, to pace the Herd to a 5-1 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at Coca-Cola Field Friday night.
The four-run shot came with no outs in the fourth inning.
Devon Travis started the inning with a single, Danny Jansen drew a walk followed by a line drive single to right field by Rowdy Tellez. That brought up Gurriel Jr., who drove the 3-1 pitch out of the park. Gurriel Jr. was playing his second game with the Bisons after making his major league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays. after 12 games in Double-A New Hampshire, The shortstop was recalled by Toronto and played 20 games for the Blue Jays before being assigned to the Bisons on May 14.
Tellez added to the Bisons lead in the fifth with a one-out bases loaded sacrifice fly to center which scored Lopes.
Scranton got on the board in the ninth when Shane Robinson led off with a triple then scored when Kyle Higashioka reached on a fielding errory by Lopes.
Point of interest: Bisons starting pitcher Ryan Borucki pitched a gem, throwing seven scoreless innings. He gave up just three hits with one walk and six strike outs. And of the 96 pitches he threw, 91 were for strikes.
Noteworthy: Conor Fisk pitched the eighth inning with two strike outs. ... Luis Santos gave up the run in the ninth inning. ... The Bisons improved to 8-5 at Coca-Cola Field this season. ... The Herd is now 13-3 when they score four or more runs in a game. ... The Bisons needed just five hits to score five runs.
