KeyBank donation saves Niagara Falls' Fourth of July fireworks

A $25,000 donation from KeyBank will cover the cost of Independence Day fireworks in Niagara Falls.

The City Council in April unanimously voted against appropriating money for fireworks because of worries about how the loss of Seneca Niagara Casino revenue would affect the city's finances.

The bank's donation will go to the Niagara Police Athletic League, which will pay the fireworks contractor, a city spokeswoman said Wednesday. The estimated $10,000 cost of police and fire overtime for the July 4 event already is in the city budget.

"We are both happy and pleased that Niagara PAL can again serve the community in helping to continue the fireworks at Hyde Park in partnership with KeyBank," said George Ihle, PAL executive director.
