Rally aims to replicate original Poor People's Campaign

A contingent from Buffalo will board buses at the LaSalle Metro Rail Park and Ride at 4:30 a.m. Monday bound for Albany as part of the New York Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival.

The rally, one of more than 30 nationwide, will demand an overhaul of the nation’s voting rights laws, new programs to lift up the 140 million Americans living in poverty, attention to ecological devastation and measures to curb militarism and what organizers call the "war economy."

The protesters plan to  engage in 40 days of nonviolent direct action and voter mobilization, building on the original Poor People’s Campaign 50 years ago.

After 40 days, on June 23, poor people, clergy and advocates from New York and across the nation will join in a mass mobilization at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
