Construction began Friday on a new jellyfish exhibit at the Aquarium of Niagara
"Aliens of the Sea" is to be completed early next year on the second floor of the Aquarium, with five tanks totaling 100 jellies and 2,000 gallons of water in a dark space with special lighting to light the transparent animals. The Aquarium had never had jellyfish in its permanent collection before.
The $440,700 project was announced in February. Funding sources include a $150,000 grant from KeyBank in partnership with the First Niagara Foundation, making the bank and foundation the title sponsors of the exhibit, according to Gary K. Siddall, Aquarium executive director.
The Aquarium also received a $68,000 Empire State Development grant and $88,147 from a Tourism Target Zone Fund controlled by the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.
