Gov. Andrew Cuomo has sent a letter to Lisa Davis, head of Dresser-Rand, criticizing the company’s decision to close its Wellsville plant and offering to help keep it open.
Describing the shutdown as "extreme and unnecessary," he said the factory, which employs 250, is “critical to the economy of the region.”
“New York State has a great deal of experience assisting businesses at risk of closure by facilitating a productive dialog with regional stakeholders, local and state government, and labor organizations,” he wrote.
The plant makes reciprocating compressors, steam turbines and steam system valves for Navy ships and commercial power generation. Siemens announced in February that it was selling its government business to Curtiss-Wright and moving the other operations to North Carolina.
