Another media romance is leading to the departure of another strong TV news reporter.
As expected, WGRZ-TV (Channel 2) reporter Danny Spewak will be leaving the station after the end of May sweeps to join a Minneapolis station with the same owner, Tegna, as Channel 2.
Spewak will be competing with his girlfriend, former WIVB-TV (Channel 4) anchor Callan Gray. Gray, who had been at Channel 4 for three years, left several weeks ago to become a reporter at KSTP in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Spewak's move to KARE was announced by the station's assistant news director, Stacey Nogy, in a memo to the staff. In the memo, Nogy wrote that Spewak will be joining KARE by the end of the month.
"He’s known for his ability to dig into tough stories and come up with innovative ideas," wrote Nogy.
Spewak has been impressive since he arrived at the NBC affiliate in June of 2013. His contract was likely up for renewal in June.
A move to Tegna's station in Minneapolis looked like a likely landing spot after Gray took a job there.
It is a big move up for both of them.
KARE is in the 15th TV market in the country. Buffalo is TV market No. 53.
Spewak will be joining another former Buffalo TV reporter at KARE. Lou Raguse, a former anchor-reporter at Channel 4, works for the station.
It is the second time in two months that a romance between two people who work for rival stations has affected both news departments.
Channel 2 sports anchor-reporter Jonah Javad left for a Dallas station in late February. His girlfriend, former Channel 4 anchor-reporter Nalina Shapiro, exited the station on March 1 to join him in Dallas. Dallas is the No. 5 TV market in the country. Shapiro has a job outside of television.
Channel 4 hasn't named a permanent anchor replacement for either Shapiro or Gray but is expected to do so some time after the end of the May sweeps.
