Amherst's West Royal Park is getting a $260,000 makeover, and the community is being called on to help install the new playground.
A community build at the park between the I-290 and Royal Parkway West is scheduled for June 23. It will be similar to a playground build held last year at the town's Billy Wilson Park.
New equipment will include a "play shaper structure" for toddlers, a "play booster structure" for 5- to 12-year-olds and a wheelchair-accessible "omni spin spinner," said Mary-Diana Pouli, executive director of the town Youth and Recreation Department.
The community build is expected to save the town $50,000. On Monday the Town Board approved the spending and agreed to hire local play equipment designer Parkitects to supervise the project.
Plans also call for improving the park's tennis courts and adding trash cans, a new water fountain and benches.
