Hamburg's John & Mary's restaurant is close to reopening after a devastating fire.
The restaurant, at 40 Buffalo St. in the village, was extensively damaged in the Jan. 16 blaze.
Owner Sharon Raymond said she expects to open by the end of May.
"The restaurant was totally gutted," Raymond said. "In four months, it's been brought back to life and regenerated." Electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems needed replacement, she said.
The food menu, including John & Mary's famed A-Bomb sausage sandwich, remains the same.
"The new interior will be nice for customers," she said "Everything's fresh." There's room for about 75 people to sit in the restaurant.
"I cannot go anywhere in Hamburg without someone stopping me, tapping me on the shoulder, or yelling across the parking lot: 'When are you coming back? When are you going to open? We miss you.' "
That sort of support from neighbors is one of the benefits from being in Hamburg, said Raymond. "Like they say, it takes a village to make it work."
