Murder charge dropped, kidnapping plea accepted in May 20 homicide

A man arrested in connection with a May 2017 homicide admitted Monday to taking part in events before a man was fatally shot but not to the shooting itself.

Matthew Schunk, 54, of the Town of Tonawanda, pleaded guilty to kidnapping in Erie County Court.

Schunk told investigators that Jonathan Grumble, 23, had come into a Swinburne Street home with a gun and threatened people on May 20.

Schunk said he and another man disarmed and restrained Grumble, according to prosecutors. Schunk also allegedly said the other man took Grumble out of the house and shot him in the head. Grumble’s body was found the next day a block away.

Schunk is the only person reported to be arrested in the Grumble case.

Judge Kenneth F. Case set sentencing for June 5.
