Seven Polish Army veterans will be honored Saturday in Buffalo with Citizen of the Year awards.
They are: Walter Futyma, Casimir Kawalek, Stanley and Antonina Markut, Stanley Nicewicz , Janusz Nieduzak and Jozefa Solecki.
The Am-Pol Eagle, a weekly Polish-American newspaper in Western New York, will present its Citizen of the Year awards following the 5:30 p.m. Mass at St. Adalbert Basilica, 212 Stanislaus St. The Mass is to commemorate the Feast of St. Adalbert and the program will remember the Polish Blue Army of World War I and the Polish Army veterans of World War II.
“As Poland and Polonia celebrate the 100th anniversary of Poland’s Independence, this publication felt it was important to honor as its Citizens of the Year those who fought to free Poland from its oppressors in World War I, particularly the members of the Blue Army from Buffalo and those who fought valiantly, but unsuccessfully, to keep it free in World War II,” said editor Roger Puchalski.
