Man accused of Mandy Steingasser murder released on bail

Joseph H. Belstadt, the accused killer of North Tonawanda High School student Mandy Steingasser, was back at his Town of Tonawanda home Friday after he was released on a bail bond from the Niagara County Jail.

"His family posted bond. He was released and he is home. He is resting and collecting himself after a couple of very stressful days," said Dominic Saraceno, defense attorney for the 43-year-old Belstadt.

Following a cold case investigation that lasted more than 24 years, Belstadt was arrested outside his home Tuesday night. He pleaded not guilty in Niagara County Court on Wednesday.

North Tonawanda police and the Niagara County District Attorney's Office allege that Belstadt strangled Steingasser, 17, after offering her a ride home early on the morning of Sept. 20, 1993, in North Tonawanda. Her body was found five weeks later in Bond Lake Park in Lewiston.
