A woman died early Wednesday in a Niagara Falls house fire, according to the city fire department.
Firefighters pulled the woman from the dining room of a single-family home at 2652 Porter Road, between 29th Street and Hyde Park Boulevard, just after 1 a.m., said Michael Winkler, chief of fire prevention for the Niagara Falls Fire Department.
The woman, who was approximately 40 years old but whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, Winkler said.
The first firefighters on the scene encountered heavy black smoke and firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the kitchen, where it started, he said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage to the home was estimated at about $30,000.
