West Seneca run/walk to benefit scholarship, Buffalo Hospice Angels funds

The sixth annual Mathletes Cindy Frank Memorial 5K Run and 1K Walk will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at 14 Holy Helpers, on Indian Church Road near Union Road in West Seneca; walkers will start at 9:15 a.m.

The race is in memory of Frank, a long-time junior high mathematics teacher at Fourteen Holy Helpers School until she lost a short but valiant battle with cancer in the summer of 2012.

Proceeds from the run bolster a student scholarship fund she started before she was diagnosed, as well as the parish and the Buffalo Hospice Angels Fund.

The Angels Fund allowed Frank to attend the wedding of her son Rick, which was moved up because of Frank’s failing health and took place in the Hospice Education Center. The ceremony, attended by 50 family members and other loved ones, was followed by food, cake and a champagne toast.

Rick Frank has been growing his hair out for two years and will have his head shaved Saturday morning so his hair can be donated to patients fighting cancer.

Cindy Frank was a math teacher at Fourteen Holy Helpers School.

Those age 15 and over who register the morning of the race pay $30; the cost is $25 for those 14 and under and $20 for walkers of any age.

Register online by the end of Friday at mathletescindyfrank5k.org at a fee of $5 less.

An after-party will follow.
