While box stores keep closing, developers are coming up with new ways to bring shoppers back.
The Clarence Town Board this week approved a one-year conditional permit that would allow Benderson Development to set up a farmers market in the Eastgate Plaza parking lot, 5183 Transit Road, behind Moe's. The market will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, for 27 weeks, starting May 2.
James A. Boglioli, an attorney representing Benderson, said the company has had success with a similar market for the past 10 years in the Tops Market parking lot in East Aurora.
"Wednesday is a slow day and we'd like to get some of the people into the shopping center and maybe into some restaurants close by," Boglioli told the board.
He said the 25,000-square-foot market at Eastgate Plaza is less than .8 percent of the 70-acre property and is located on an underutilized part of the lot.
He said the 24 vendors all sell farm products, such as fresh produce, honey, maple syrup, jams and jellies, as well as cheeses, specialty breads, flowers and hand-crafted jewelry.
