Candidates must learn one thing: there is no such thing as ‘upstate’
I would like to provide some unsolicited advice to Ms. Nixon and other candidates for office from the New York City/Long Island area.
There is no “Upstate New York.”
There are several regions, and each one has subtle nuances in perspective and culture. New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley constitute three distinct areas. In addition we have the North Country; Capital District, Mohawk Valley, Central New York, Southern Tier, Finger Lakes and Western New York. A quick internet search will provide the candidates with the specific counties of each region.
When candidates lump all these distinct areas into one “upstate” configuration, they reinforce the idea that the rest of the state is a homogenous entity. Nothing could be further from the truth, and this voter will be watching carefully to see if those running understand this concept.
